Message from the President: China Trip 2006

I would like to recap some of the information in our previous newletter by updating you with some of the latest improvements to the Next Generation System developed in my recent trip to China.

The Next Generation System truly is the best hair system in my 40 years of doing hair replacement! But--- we have made improvements… and I mean improvements!

Please allow me to share with you what puts this system in a class of it’s own.

The methods used to produce the Next Generation Hair System are different than any other system now or in the past history of making hair systems.

A. Base Material Thickness (mm) is perfect in order to accomplish a scalp look yet maintain durability. The thickness is chosen so you don’t have a definition where your hair ends and the edge of the system base begins. You feel no edge when the system is on.

B. The method used to put the hair in the base creates the most natural hair look no matter how much one pays for hair. This system has one hair at a time placed into the base. This is a very strong method for good hair retention.

C. This method of adding hair to the base also creates wonderful styling capabilities. The hair truly flows 360 degrees. Other methods of adding hair to a system, i.e. knotting, v-looping, etc. has some limitations and isn’t 360 degrees flexible in styling. Even if you don’t change your hairstyle, the 360-degree flex at the base where the hair comes through is great for “wind damage”! Hair moves and falls more as your growing hair does in the wind.

I always like to take some time to answer questions I receive in my email. The most popular so far being: If your hair system doesn’t look 100% like growing hair on your head, what is missing?

1. Color. This could be the color or not enough gray or highlights. Don’t be afraid to highlight your hair some.

2. Too much hair. This often is the problem. I feel 60% of all hair wearers have too much hair.

3. System is old or used up. Some people need to replace every 3 months while others can go 9 months. At the end of the year you should have one ready to wear-not order, but ready to put on. This way your hair will always be on the mark.

4. You’re not creative with your hairstyle selection. Try a wet look and you will see how easy it is to do. Your hair will look more real plus the wet look covers up a few problems such as color being off. The wet look makes it a bit darker. Also, if your system is thick, the wet look looks more like thinner hair.

Hair transplants can be a great option, however, it is always best to think carefully about your options, and discuss them with a hair transplant surgeon. Often times, one’s expectations of the results may differ than the actual outcome.

So, how exactly do you know if transplants are the way to go for you?

Here are some things to consider.

Healthy hair growth in “donor” areas. Transplants involve taking hair from where you have it and surgically moving it to where you don’t. To do so, you must have healthy, thick hair growth at the back and sides of your head. These are called “donor” areas. Extent of hair loss. Men have a finite amount of hair available for hair transplantation. The more the hair loss, the less “donor” hair available. If you have extensive baldness, you must understand that you must adapt your expectations, and understand that you may be able to create a natural front hairline, but will still remain bald in the top and crown. A front hairline of growing hair is great. You then simply place your hair system behind your real hairline and you have accomplished a great hair styling feat.

Scalp Characteristics. The characteristics of your scalp play a role in the ease and speed of hair transplantations final results. Scarring can affect growth as well as decreased vascularity due to heavy smoking and poorly controlled diabetes.

Age. You are 40+ years old. This means your hair loss has almost stopped or has stopped.

Area of hair loss. Transplants are best if you only lost hair in one of three areas: front, center, or crown.

The first disadvantage is that there can be a temporary shedding of some of the preexisting hairs in the area where the transplant was performed from two to six months after the procedure. This is because of the local shock of surgery and temporary effects on circulation. All but the few hairs that were destined to fall out permanently in the next six months or so will grow back but the hair in the area may look slightly thinner in the mirror before it looks thicker after the transplanted hair and the “shock-lost” hair grows in. The second is that it may require two or more sessions to achieve final satisfactory density of the transplanted hair, which leads to what may be a third disadvantage, cost. Another disadvantage is that you often forget that if your hair is thinning your existing hair will continue to go bald.

There are advantages to hair transplants. First, hair transplant surgery can actually redistribute existing healthy hair to areas of the scalp where the hair has gone bald or thinning. The results typically last a lifetime. If you have realistic expectations, you will understand that you will not get a full head of hair, however it can create the illusion of substantially more hair that there actually is. For some this can be very satisfying.

What causes gray hair?
Hair typically turns gray as a result of aging. Pigment in the hair shaft comes from special cells at the root (base) of the hair. These cells are genetically programmed to make a certain amount of pigment (melanin) at specific ages. At some point in the aging process, these cells make less and less pigment until the hair has very little pigment. White hair has no pigment, and gray hair has some but not as much as red, black or brown hair.

Not all hairs respond in the same way or at the same time. So the graying process usually is gradual. You can’t prevent graying. Some people start graying in their 30s, and some not until their 60s. Genetics likely play a strong role in graying.

Keeping up to date with the correct gray percentage in your hair system plays a key role in a natural piece. Often one will gray more in the temples and sides than the front, top, and crown.
